USB 3.0 ports are becoming an ever more common addition to laptops and desktop PC motherboards. But any manufacturer wanting to add the fastest USB ports to their products can’t currently rely on chipset makers to provide it as standard. Neither Intel or AMD has added it yet, so a separate chip is required pushing up cost and complexity. That’s bad news for manufacturers and vendors, but great news for a company like NEC that supplies those USB 3.0 chips.

Intel angered PC vendors in the middle of last year when it announced USB 3.0 chipsets would be delayed until 2012. The company didn’t give a reason at the time, but the recent introduction of Thunderbolt as a high-speed interface and eventual alternative to USB may be something to do with that decision.
While Intel has definitely ruffled some feathers with a lack of USB 3.0 support, AMD is about to start adding it to products. Support for USB 3.0 has been added to both the A75 (Hudson-D3) and A70M Fusion (Hudson-M3) chipsets launched this week.
While AMD has yet to formally announced its inclusion, or the new Hudson launches it seems, USB Implementors Forum (USB-IF) certification has been granted as proven by the USB-IF compliant product listing for both chipsets. https://loadpotent200.weebly.com/atheros-ar5-driver-for-mac.html. Such support should make AMD’s chipsets look more desirable to PC vendors, and AMD has already shown that its Fusion line is more than capable of competing with Intel’s Atom and Core-i3 line-up, especially with the recent introduction of the 32nm A-Series Fusion APU Llano.
